Considering one of my all-time favourite parts of reading and watching the Harry Potter series was the slow-burn romance between Ron and Hermione, I've never written a romantic story. This stems from two main factors:
Until the age of 21, I was very unlucky in love myself, so I had very little experience to draw from
Book 1 in my Archivist's trilogy, my first major project, is from the perspective of an asexual, aromantic character
In addition to these facts, I've never been particularly drawn to stories with romances front and center. That is not to say that I don't like them (I'm currently knee-deep in the Bridgerton book series and I'm impatiently waiting for Bennidict's season on the show), I just prefer it when romance is presented as a morsel of delightfulness, scattered about here and there. I think this is fairly evident when looking at my favourite ships* of all time:
*It's also obvious that I'm clearly a big canon shipper as well, as all of these ships are endgame (save for Lyra and Will, and Martha and Jonas, couples who would likely be together if it weren't for extenuating universe limitations [and for Martha being Jonas' aunt - it's complicated]).
On another note, I would be remiss not to mention that I have a strong distaste for "love triangles" (two boys like the same girl, which is not a true love triangle, but I digress). I don't count "The Hunger Games" here (Peeta and Katniss are another fav ship of mine) because the movies definitely played up that storyline, much to my dismay. So don't expect me to write a story that includes a girl "choosing between two boys" plot line anytime soon!
All of this is to say that romance plays a role in both Books 2 and 3 of my trilogy, more so in Book 3 (I can't explain why because, you know, spoilers, sweetie!). Writing romance and expressing feelings of the heart has been fun thus far, and I'm excited to continue exploring the inner worlds of my characters.
Do you enjoy writing romance? If so, do you have any tropes you like to include or any you endeavor to avoid?
