I am currently in the process of revamping the writing club at work. I started this program in 2018 before I was even part of the programming and marketing team. For this reason, and the fact that writing is my passion, this club is very near and dear to me.
From the very start, I attempted to make the writing club everything for everyone. This came out of my desire to attract as many people as possible to the program (can you tell I'm a people pleaser?), but the result was often the opposite. By trying to cater to everyone, I catered to no one. The scope of the program was simply too large. While I still hope to attract writers of every interest and skill level, my approach to doing so has changed.
Some of my most dedicated and passionate attendees over the years have been teenagers. While I have plans to launch an ongoing program for adults in the new year, my focus now is a short-term program for teens. Introducing TeNoWriMo (Teen Novella Writing Month).
Instead of 50,000 words in November, as per NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), participants of TeNoWriMo will aim to write 25,000 words. I'm structuring the program to include 3 meetings in October (covering planning), a check-in meeting in November (at approx. 12,500 words), and 3 meetings in December (covering revision).
I've begun to roll out marketing on social media while I work on creating content for the meetings behind the scenes. I'm very excited to see how things turn out as I believe I've got a good idea and a solid execution of it. Time will tell! I hope that TeNoWriMo will become a yearly program. I've got my fingers crossed that it will. On a side note, praise be to Canva for having the tools that allowed me to build such a wicked logo.
Have you been a part of a writing club before? What was your favourite component?
